Wedding Frequently Asked Questions
Frequently asked questions about celebrant weddings
Planning a wedding is exciting, but it can also feel a little overwhelming. If you’ve never worked with a celebrant before, you probably have lots of questions – and that’s completely normal.
Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of creating hundreds of personalised wedding ceremonies for couples across Devon, the South West and beyond. Every couple is different, which means every ceremony I write is completely unique too. Whether you’re dreaming of saying your vows in a beautiful garden, on a beach, in a woodland, at a family home, in a barn or at one of Devon’s wonderful wedding venues, I’m here to help you create a ceremony that feels authentically you.
Below you’ll find answers to the questions I’m asked most often about celebrant-led weddings. If you don’t see your question here, please do get in touch. I love talking weddings, and I’m always happy to have a friendly, no-obligation chat about your ideas.
Can We Have A Celebrant-Led Wedding Anywhere?
One of the biggest joys of choosing a celebrant-led wedding is the freedom it gives you. Unlike a traditional legal ceremony, your wedding doesn’t have to take place in a licensed venue. If you have permission to use the location, we can usually create your ceremony there.
I’ve conducted ceremonies in beautiful gardens, vineyards, woodland settings, elegant country houses, family homes and even beside lakes and streams. If you’ve found somewhere that means something special to you, chances are we can make it work.
The location becomes part of your story, and I love helping couples make the most of that. Whether you’re planning an intimate gathering with your closest family or a larger celebration with everyone you love, your ceremony should reflect your personalities and your journey together.
Can We Get Married Outdoors In Devon?
Absolutely – and Devon has some of the most beautiful outdoor ceremony locations in the country.
From clifftops overlooking the Jurassic Coast to rolling countryside, vineyards, gardens and woodland clearings, there are so many wonderful places to exchange your vows. Outdoor weddings have a relaxed, natural atmosphere that many couples fall in love with.
Of course, we always have a sensible Plan B should the British weather decide to remind us who’s in charge! Having an indoor option nearby gives everyone peace of mind, and whichever plan we use, your ceremony will still be every bit as personal and meaningful.
Is A Celebrant Wedding Legally Binding?
In England and Wales, a celebrant-led wedding isn’t currently the legal part of your marriage.
Most of my couples complete the legal paperwork at their local Register Office either before or after their celebration. Many describe it as “doing the paperwork” because they see their celebrant ceremony as their real wedding day – the moment when they stand in front of the people they love and make their promises to one another.
The lovely thing is that separating the legal registration from your celebration gives you complete freedom to create a ceremony that’s personal, relaxed and entirely centred around the two of you.
Why Choose A Celebrant Instead Of A Registrar?
This is probably the question I’m asked most often.
A registrar has an important legal role to perform, and they must follow specific rules and wording. As an independent celebrant, my role is completely different.
I spend time getting to know you both, hearing your story, discovering what makes your relationship unique and writing a ceremony that couldn’t belong to anyone else.
There are no standard scripts, no templates and no “insert couple’s name here.” Every word is written especially for you.
You can include personal vows, handfasting, ring warming, family members, children, pets, symbolic rituals, laughter, happy tears and all those little moments that make your relationship yours.
For many couples, that’s what transforms a wedding ceremony from something they have to do into the most memorable part of their whole day.
Can We Personalise Every Part Of Our Ceremony?
Yes – and I actively encourage it.
Your ceremony should feel like the two of you from beginning to end. Together we’ll create something that reflects your personalities, your values and your relationship.
You might want a ceremony that’s romantic and elegant, relaxed and informal, full of laughter, deeply emotional or a lovely mixture of all of those things.
We’ll choose the music, readings, wording, promises and symbolic elements together, creating a ceremony that’s completely unique. There really are very few rules, and that’s one of the things I love most about celebrant weddings.
Can We Include Handfasting Or Other Symbolic Rituals?
Absolutely.
Handfasting is one of my favourite symbolic ceremonies. Beautiful coloured ribbons are gently wrapped around your joined hands as each ribbon represents something you’d like your marriage to be built upon – love, trust, friendship, adventure, family, laughter, strength or anything else that’s meaningful to you.
But that’s only one possibility.
Many couples also choose sand ceremonies, candle lighting, wine ceremonies, ring warming, tree planting, memory tables or other symbolic moments that reflect their beliefs and personalities.
If you’ve seen something you like, I’d love to hear about it. If you’re not sure what’s possible, I have lots of ideas we can explore together.
Can We Include Our Dog In The Ceremony?
Yes!
Dogs often play a starring role in my ceremonies, and they always seem to steal everyone’s hearts.
Your four-legged family member might walk down the aisle, carry the rings, pose for photographs or simply sit with your guests while you exchange your vows.
The only thing I can never guarantee is that they’ll follow the rehearsal quite as carefully as everyone else!
Can Family And Friends Be Involved?
Definitely.
Some of the most memorable moments I’ve witnessed have come from involving the people who mean the most to you.
Parents can share a blessing or reading, children can take part in symbolic rituals, grandparents can become witnesses to your promises, and friends can tell stories or perform music.
Whether your family is large or small, there are lots of thoughtful ways to include them without making anyone feel uncomfortable.
What If We Don’t Like Public Speaking?
Please don’t worry.
You’re certainly not alone, and I promise you’re in very good company.
Many couples tell me they’re nervous about standing in front of everyone they know. The lovely thing is that you’re never expected to perform.
I’ll guide you through every step of the ceremony, gently prompting you whenever you need me. We can keep your vows simple, have you repeat them after me, or even use “I do” responses if that feels more comfortable.
My job is to help you relax so you can simply enjoy the moment.
Can We Write Our Own Vows?
If you’d like to, yes.
Some couples love writing deeply personal vows, while others prefer the reassurance of traditional wording. Most choose something somewhere in between.
I’ll give you lots of guidance, examples and ideas if you’d like to write your own, and I’m always happy to read through them beforehand if you’d like another pair of eyes.
There is absolutely no pressure. The most meaningful vows are simply the ones that feel true to you.
How Far In Advance Should We Book?
Popular Saturdays, particularly between May and September, often book well over a year in advance, so it’s always worth getting in touch as soon as you’ve chosen your date.
That said, if your wedding is much sooner, please don’t assume I’ll be unavailable. If I have space in my diary, I’d be delighted to help.
How Much Does A Celebrant Wedding Cost?
Every ceremony I create is completely bespoke, so my fee reflects the time, care and attention that goes into getting to know you, writing your ceremony and delivering it on the day.
My wedding package includes our planning meetings, unlimited support throughout the process, a beautifully written personalised ceremony, liaison with your venue and suppliers where needed, and the delivery of your ceremony on your wedding day.
For my current pricing, please visit my Wedding Ceremonies page or get in touch. I’d be delighted to send you my brochure and answer any questions you may have.
What Happens After We Enquire?
We’ll arrange a relaxed chat, either over a coffee, by video call or on the telephone, depending on what suits you best.
This is simply an opportunity for us to get to know one another. You can tell me about your plans, ask as many questions as you like and decide whether I’m the right celebrant for you.
If you choose to book, I’ll send everything you need to get started, and together we’ll begin creating a ceremony that’s every bit as unique as your relationship.
What If We’re Already Legally Married?
Many of my couples are.
Some have had a simple Register Office ceremony first, perhaps because they were getting married abroad, organising a destination wedding or wanted to complete the legal paperwork separately.
Others married during Covid with only a handful of guests and are now celebrating properly with all the people they love.
A celebrant ceremony is the perfect opportunity to have the wedding you’ve always imagined, without being restricted by legal wording or time limits.
Do You Conduct Destination Weddings And Overseas Ceremonies?
Yes, and I absolutely love them.
Whether you’re dreaming of exchanging your vows on a beach in Greece, in the vineyards of France, beside a lake in Italy, in the forests of Scandinavia or somewhere completely different, I’d be delighted to travel with you.
I’ve already had the pleasure of conducting ceremonies overseas, including weddings in Estonia, and there’s something incredibly special about helping couples celebrate in a place that holds meaning for them.
Many destination weddings involve completing the legal marriage in the UK before travelling, allowing your overseas ceremony to focus entirely on the celebration, your story and the promises you’re making to one another.
If you’re planning a wedding abroad, I’d love to hear all about your plans. Every destination brings its own unique atmosphere, and together we’ll create a ceremony that feels just as unforgettable as the location itself.
Which Areas Do You Cover?
I’m based in beautiful Sidmouth on the East Devon coast and regularly conduct ceremonies throughout Devon, Exeter, Exmouth, Honiton, Budleigh Salterton, the South West and beyond.
I’m always happy to travel throughout the UK, and I also conduct destination weddings overseas.
Wherever your story takes you, I’d be honoured to be part of it.
